Bone Marrow Transplant
Bone marrow is a jelly like tissue present in the bones. It forms the blood cells which are then released in to the circulation. For many diseases such as aplastic anemia and leukemia (blood cancer), a marrow transplant is the only hope of survival. Bone marrow transplant in a thalassemic patient may help in the production of normal red cells and thus stop the regular requirement of transfusions in these patients.
It is necessary to find a “fully compatible donor” for a bone marrow transplant. There is only a 1:4 chance of finding a matching donor in the family and 1:20,000 in the general population. Many more lives could be saved if more people enroll as potential marrow donors.
