A SINGLE DONATION CAN HELP A NUMBER OF PATIENTS
Your blood may be used as WHOLE BLOOD or separated into its parts called BLOOD COMPONENTS.
Whole blood is used to replace blood lost due to wounds caused by accident of injury, due to major surgery, internal bleeding or complications of childbirth. It can be used in the treatment of blood diseases like hemophilia, leukemia, diseases of kidney and liver, massive burns and many other conditions.
Separations into blood components can help three or more patients. After each donation, blood is separated so that the patient will receive only needed components.
RED BLOOD CELLS : Commonly referred to as packed cells are useful in the treatment of sever anemia. Anemic patient do not have enough red cells in their blood or have a low hemoglobin, present in the red blood cells, picks up oxygen from the air in the lungs and carries it to the tissues which require oxygen to live.
PLATELETS: The number of effectiveness of a patients platelets may be reduced by treatment for cancer or after extensive surgery. For these conditions, a patient may receive a platelet transfusion.
FRESH FROZEN PLASMA (FFP): Since it contains substances that prevent bleeding, it is used to control bleeding.
CRYPRECIPITATE: Is a concentrate of some clotting factors, especially Factor VIII and fibrinogen, found in the plasma. It is used to control bleeding in-patients with bleeding, disorders such as hemophilia and von willebrand’s disease
PLASMA PROTEIN FRACTIONS:
Albumin is useful in patients with extensive burns, surgery with major blood loss, liver disease or in patients with malnutrition.
Globulin’s: Plasma fractionated into globulin’s contains antibodies and is used as vaccines. Plasma from persons recovering from certain diseases or who have had a fractionation into hyper immune globulin’s which contain antibodies in very high titer. These are used in the prevention of hepatitis – B, rabies and tetanus.
