Account for less than 1% of blood volume
Combat inflammation and infection
Have surface proteins or HLA (human leukocyte associated) antigens - unique for each person - used to type tissues to prevent rejection
Most have short life span
In healthy body some live few days to several months
During infection they live only a few hours
5,000 - 9,000 per cubic mm of blood
About 1 WBC to 700 RBCs
Number may vary with time of day, exercise and other factors
Lowest in early morning and highest in afternoon
Dependent on age-count in children is somewhat higher
In newborn = 16,000/mm (greater number of lymphocytes)
Differential count indicates relative numbers of types of leukocytes
Leukopoiesis-production of WBCs due to hormones called CSFs (colony stimulating factors) produced by macrophages and T lymphocytes
