Only 100 Rare Blood Groups Donors in AIIMS ( as on 1st June 2008)

With just 24 months to go for the Commonwealth Games, the Delhi government expects to complete all projects including the games village and the various venues by December 2009—almost 10 months before the event

With current population of Delhi exceeding 16.5 million ( From 400,000 in 1901, Delhi’s population zoomed to 13.8 million in 2001. In 2006, the government’s own estimation put the figure at 16.5 million, going up to 19 million in 2011. Besides, it is estimated that 200,000-300,000 migrants a year settle in Delhi. ) 

Are we ready with sufficient stocks of blood with us or do we have good numbers of blood donors registered with our blood bank ? As per our recent RTI filed in AIIMS we came to know that we have only 100 registered donors of rare blood type with Premier Medical Institute of India .

Our Delhi government should learn from the example set by Beijing, with total population of over 17 million people , Beijing is confident it can provide sufficient supplies of rhesus negative blood -- rare in China.

"We have a team of 1,000 volunteers in Beijing at present who are rhesus negative, and we can call on them to give blood if there is an emergency," Deng Xiaohong, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Health Administration, told a news conference.

The city has a total of 100,000 or so volunteer blood donors, Deng said, and in an emergency can call upon other provinces to provide blood. ( Click Here )
